Dallas Mavericks dud in dominant win over Hornets: 1. Dwight Powell
Powell started on Monday night, but the Hornets were playing small with Mason Plumlee and Jaden McDaniels out in the health and safety protocols. Dallas began the game with two big men on the floor and quickly pivoted to playing one. Kristaps Porzingis was white-hot from the opening tipoff, which meant DP was quick to exit.
Powell started both halves but was limited to just eight total minutes against the Hornets. He had two rebounds, but failed to score and turned the ball over. It was the second night of a back-to-back, and the Mavericks played small most of the game to counter Charlotte.
Moses Brown has stepped up and played well when given the opportunity, so it will be interesting to see if the 22-year-old can pass Powell in the rotation. DP averages just 5.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in less than 20 minutes per game on the season. Head coach Jason Kidd is playing smaller and that will continue for Dallas moving forward.
Dwight Powell’s minutes are worth watching as 2022 approaches. He played just 12.7 minutes against the Thunder on Sunday night and received just eight versus the Hornets. Will he get back to playing around 20 minutes per game? Stay tuned.
