Dallas Mavericks dud from home loss to Wizards: 1. Dwight Powell
For the second straight game, the Mavs started Willie Cauley-Stein over Powell, but it has not changed the results. Both men have struggled to begin the 2021-2022 season, and that continued on Saturday night. Cauley-Stein had four points and two blocks in ten minutes of action, but Dallas was outscored by seven in his time on the floor.
Powell was a team-worst minus-12 in his ten minutes of action. He managed to score four points and grab one rebound, but it was an ugly night for the Mavericks center duo.
Reggie Bullock and Maxi Kleber stepped up to handle the extra minutes. The Mavs premier offseason acquisition struggled again on Nov. 27. He made just two of his seven 3-point attempts, and Dallas was outscored by three in his 28 minutes on the floor. The team needs to find a way to get Bullock’s shots to start falling.
Coach Kidd continues to play fewer minutes with Powell and Cauley-Stein on the floor. Will he soon pull off the band-aid, and knock one or both out of the rotation? Maxi Kleber is back and ready to handle 30-plus minutes a night. When Jalen Brunson returns, he will play a significant role, and Bullock was a starter last season in New York. One of those three should start with the other two playing significant minutes off the bench.
