Dallas Mavericks offense is struggling with Luka Doncic on the floor
The most surprising stat is the Mavs have an offensive rating of 101.9 with Doncic on the floor. If that was Dallas's number for the season, they would sit 25th in the league ahead of only the rebuilding Pelicans, Magic, Rockets, Thunder, and Pistons.
Luka is unquestionably one of the best offensive players in the league. He is still 14th in the league in points per game, despite his slow shooting start. Doncic is shooting 43.3 percent from the field and 28.6 percent on his threes. Those numbers are going to improve.
The Mavericks offense with Luka on the floor will be significantly better too. They led the league in offensive rating in 2020 and were eighth last season. Dallas upgraded their roster this offseason and have played five of their first 11 games without Kristaps Porzingis. Things will improve.
Teams are committing maximum attention to Luka, which is nothing new. The change is the Mavericks' spacing has shrunk a bit in new head coach Jason Kidd’s system. Luka Doncic will adjust, but the margins are tighter, especially with two big men on the floor. How high can Dallas climb? Expect them to finish in the top ten in offensive rating by the season’s end.
