Rumors: Dallas Mavericks searching for Tim Hardaway Jr. suitor

Marc Stein reported (subscription required) that the Mavs ability to make a blockbuster trade rests on finding a team willing to trade for Hardaway Jr. The 6’5 wing is having a down season after signing a four-year $71 million contract last offseason. His salary decreases each year making it team-friendly when trying to make a deal.

Hardaway Jr. is in the midst of a down season. He has moved back into the sixth man role and is shooting just 39.1 percent from the field in his 37 games played. THJ is still averaging 14.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 30.3 minutes per game, but the 29-year-old has been inconsistent.

The Dallas Mavericks want to make a splash before the trade deadline, but finding a trade partner eager to take Tim Hardaway Jr. will be difficult. He is in the first season of a four-year deal and has always been a streaky player. Hopeful contenders will not be eager to take on his contract. The Mavs need THJ to be in the deal to acquire a player making significant money because teams that lack cap space need to match salaries in a trade.

Expect the Mavericks to keep Kristaps Porzingis and Tim Hardaway Jr. on their roster next to Luka Doncic through the Feb. 10 trade deadline.
