Ranking Dallas Mavericks from least to most untouchable

These are two key pieces to the Mavs success and both are set to become unrestricted free agents in the summer of 2022. Will Dallas think about trading them away if extension talks are not going well?

5. Jalen Brunson

The Mavs selected Brunson in the second round of the 2018 NBA Draft and decided to sign him to a unique contract. It was a four-year $6.1 million deal, but it does not allow Dallas to make him a restricted free agent next summer. Brunson can sign a maximum of a four-year $55 million extension during this season, but if not, he will be free to sign with any team.

JB is going to lead the Mavs second unit and play the sixth man role. They need him producing buckets, especially when Luka Doncic needs a rest.

4. Dorian Finney-Smith

Finney-Smith is the Mavs top 3-and-D wing. He always matches up against the opposition’s top scorer and continues to improve his jumper. Doe-Doe is a key piece of the team’s success, and fans know what to expect from the 28-year-old.

Dallas needs to bring back both Jalen Brunson and Dorian Finney-Smith or find a way to trade them because they will not have cap space in the summer of 2022 to sign replacements. The Mavs will be limited to their mid-level exception and minimum deals as Luka’s extension kicks in.
