What is causing the Dallas Mavericks shooting woes?

The team’s shot selection could improve. They are taking the fewest shots within five feet of the rim per game at 22.0. The Nets are 29th and are attempting 1.4 more in that range every night. The Mavs need to get more easy looks at the rim, but teams are packing the paint to stop Luka Doncic and not respecting Dallas’s shooters.

They are also taking a few too many contest triples. The Mavericks sit seventh in 3-pointers attempted with a defender two to four feet away or tight as defined by NBA Stats. Dallas has made just 23.8 percent of those tries, and that percentage is 21st in the league. They are just not quality looks.

The Mavs are getting their share of open triples. They are seventh in open three per game but have hit just 28.2 percent of those tries to rank 28th in the league. Dallas hits over 40 percent when they are wide open, but the Mavericks are struggling on the other attempts.

Their shooting should improve on both open and tightly contested threes. The Dallas Mavericks must create more shots at the rim if they plan on climbing into the top ten in 3-point percentage.
