Ranking mismatches for Luka Doncic and the Mavericks to hunt vs. Suns: 3. McGee/Biyombo
Phoenix prefers to play a traditional lineup in both units. Deandre Ayton will start at center with JaVale McGee or Bismack Biyombo backing up. The Suns have primarily used McGee off the bench, but both played in the series finale against the Pelicans, despite the two backup centers combining for just eight minutes.
If the Suns start the series with either player in the rotation, Luka is going to hunt them. He wants to play both men off the floor quickly, so the Mavericks can play small without giving up a size and rebounding advantage to the Suns.
Ranking mismatches for Luka Doncic and the Mavericks to hunt vs. Suns: 2. Payne
Cameron Payne struggled in the Suns series against the Pelicans, and the backup point guard figures to be a favorite matchup of Doncic’s heading into this series. The 6’1 guard does not have the size or strength to stick with the Mavericks superstar.
Expect number 77 and Jalen Brunson to attack Payne when he comes into the game. The Suns cannot afford to overtax Chris Paul or Devin Booker, so Cameron Payne will have to play 15-plus minutes per game and it will be an opportunity for Dallas to feast.
