Why the Dallas Mavericks need to keep Marquese Chriss: 2. Energy and effort
Things have looked stale for the Mavs at times this season. Their roster is virtually unchanged since trading for Kristaps Porzingis back in 2019. Dallas has made minor moves on the fringes, but they continue to keep the same core. That continuity can lead to complacency at times, and the Mavericks have lacked energy on a few occasions.
Chriss does not. He was out of the NBA to begin the season, and the 24-year-old wants nothing more than to be back playing basketball. Chriss is competing hard every second for that chance.
In his first game with the Mavs, he had six points, eight rebounds, and one block in 16.4 minutes just hours after signing with the team. The 6’9 big man followed it with 13 points, five rebounds, and two steals in 13 minutes versus the defending champion Bucks.
The energy and effort that Chriss brings can be contagious. It is one thing that has endeared him to Mavs fans from the moment he joined the team. There are not always going to be monster numbers or highlight-reel plays for a backup big man, but he can compete hard every minute he is on the floor, and that is what Marquese Chriss does.
