Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic is missing open shots

The Mavs lack of shot creation around Doncic limits his catch and shoot opportunities, but he did take 1.4 per game last season. That number has dropped to 0.3 or just two catch-and-shoot chances in the first six games. Increasing that number alone will improve his percentages.

Digging in further, Luka has shot just four 3-pointers all season with the defender within four feet, per NBA Stats. He is getting open, but the shots are not falling. Doncic hit nine of 35 on open looks or 25.7 percent after shooting 37.3 percent on those attempts last season.

The 22-year-old star is too skilled to keep missing open shots, but he has only attempted three classified as wide open by NBA Stats. Those are difficult shots to create for a superstar, but he did take 1.5 per game last season. The Mavericks are not creating as much space under new head coach Jason Kidd through six games. Will that change? It is too early to tell.

Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic keeps missing open shots, which will not last, but there is one slightly troubling trend with his shot profile through six games.
