How can the Dallas Mavericks help Luka Doncic on defense in Game 3 and beyond?

Doncic is competitive and has an incredible will to win, so expect the 23-year-old superstar to be more prepared and to perform better on the defensive end. He is not going to be a lockdown defender, but the 23-year-old superstar can do better at keeping his man in front of him, and the team defense has to be more connected behind number 77.

Head coach Jason Kidd will change up the defensive scheme in Game 3 too. Dallas will try to avoid getting Luka switched onto the ball. The Mavs will mix in some zone and try to fight over screens more. When Doncic gets switched onto Paul or Booker expect the Mavs to send two and force them to give the ball up. Dallas cannot afford to have Luka isolated on the Suns' guards, so expect schematic changes to come.

Dallas cannot just stick with one change, but they need to keep firing different looks at the Suns throughout the game. Chris Paul can solve any defense, so the Mavericks need to keep him on his toes. Expect Dallas to defend full court and throw a plethora of different looks at CP3 and the Suns moving forward.

The Suns look like a team on a mission right now. They dominated one of the hottest teams in the NBA in the first two games. Phoenix has two stars, depth, and experience. They are the better team in this series, so the Dallas Mavericks need to be perfect to win. Luka Doncic has scored 80 points in the first two games, but poor individual and team defense has sunk the Mavs.

The series shifts to Dallas for Game 3, and the Mavericks need a fast start on Friday night. The Suns grabbed early leads in each of the first two games, but it cannot happen again. Phoenix is the best fourth-quarter team in the league, so the Mavs need an early lead and better defense if they want a chance to win. Can Dallas make the right adjustments? Stay tuned.
