Dallas Mavericks should deal every first-round pick if it lands Luka Doncic a co-star
The Mavs cannot make the same mistake they did with Kristaps Porzingis. Dallas traded two first-round picks to acquire Luka Doncic, which was absolutely the right move for the franchise. It also cost them two first-rounders to land Kristaps Porzingis, and that trade took the Mavericks out of any deal for a star player since Jan. 2019.
The Mavs will be able to trade their 2022 first-round pick on draft night. If they want to deal it for a role player, that could turn into a wise move, but the front office needs to keep the rest of their first-round picks at the ready to land a second star. Dallas cannot trade them all for ancillary pieces or it takes them out of the running for the marquee targets.
Star players want to play with Luka Doncic. They talk about it during every All-Star weekend, and it leaves the door open for Dallas to land the big fish, but the Mavs won’t be able to do it without a collection of first-round picks to offer. Dallas needs to be careful with their draft assets if they want to land Luka a co-star.
