What can the Dallas Mavericks learn from the Kristaps Porzingis trade?
The trade was the right move when examining the process. Dallas had a budding superstar in Luka Doncic and wanted to get him a young co-star with the hopes of building a championship contender. They took a chance on a 23-year-old All-Star and injuries ruined the pairing. It was unfortunate, and a reminder that risks do not always pay off, but it should not prevent Dallas from taking another one.
Examining what the Mavs can learn from the original KP trade is an important topic. Dallas was wise to acquire veterans that could boost their rotation in the deal. They rebuilt the value of Tim Hardaway Jr. and Trey Burke and paid both to stay in Dallas.
The biggest takeaway from the KP deal needs to be the Mavericks paying more attention to injury histories. Porzingis was relatively healthy during his first three seasons in New York before tearing his ACL. The Unicorn was rehabbing that injury when Dallas acquired him. The 7’3 big man was never the same and struggled to stay on the court. The Mavericks need to bake in the proper discount for players with a checkered injury history.
The Dallas Mavericks sent Kristaps Porzingis to Washington at the 2022 trade deadline. Moving off his contract gives the franchise more flexibility moving forward as they continue to search for a co-star for Luka Doncic. Can they find one? Stay tuned to find out.
