Head coach Jason Kidd has improved the Dallas Mavericks defense

The Mavs produced the highest offensive rating in the league in 2020, but they finished 18th in defensive rating and were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. Former head coach Rick Carlisle talked a ton about improving their defense as they looked to take the next step. Dallas slipped to 21st in defensive rating last season, and there were questions about how much the Mavericks' defense could improve with Luka Doncic leading their charge.

Kidd changed the scheme and increased the aggressiveness as they have jumped to sixth in defensive rating this season with mostly the same roster. Everyone is most committed on the defensive end, including Doncic, who has discussed defense leading the way in several wins this season.

The Dallas Mavericks needed to improve on the defensive end of the floor to become serious title contenders. They had the best offensive in the league in 2020, but could not make it out of the first round of the playoffs. Kidd improving the defense was needed, but it seemed impossible.

It is not just on the defensive end of the floor that Jason Kidd has improved the Mavs. He has them looking like a serious playoff threat because of their ability on both ends of the floor, including their improved clutch play.
