Pelicans gearing up to contend with Mavericks and best of West by adding CJ McCollum
New Orleans has been searching for a scoring guard for two years, and they found one in CJ McCollum. The Pelicans should have one of the best offenses in the league when Zion Williamson is healthy, and no team will be looking forward to facing New Orleans.
Their defense could be problematic, though. New Orleans is 20th in defensive rating this season after finishing 23rd a year ago. The Blazers have consistently been near the bottom with McCollum and Damian Lillard in the backcourt. The Pelicans shipped one of their best perimeter defenders in Josh Hart for McCollum, and their defense could hold them back moving forward.
Trading for McCollum was a massive upgrade, but the Pelicans will still be behind the Dallas Mavericks in the standings next season. New Orleans will be looking to make the playoffs and are going to be a problematic opponent for teams, but the Mavericks have one of the five best players in the league on their roster.
