Will the Dallas Mavericks sign a better free agent than Shawn Marion?
Marion averaged 11.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.0 steal, and 0.6 blocks in 30.4 minutes per game in his five seasons with the Mavericks. He was an elite role player, but past his All-Star days before coming to Dallas. Marion played just one more season after leaving Dallas in 2014 at age 36.
Will the Mavericks sign a better free agent during the Luka Doncic era? Hopefully, but it is far from a guarantee. A lot of landing a star free agent is relationships with the team's current star player, and Doncic does not appear interested in recruiting talent to Dallas at this point in his career. It is why the Mavs are always linked to Luka’s friend and mentor Goran Dragic.
The Dallas Mavericks should use this as a lesson. Saving cap space to land a superstar free agent is never going to happen. They should be focused on trading and drafting for the pieces they need to put an annual title contender around superstar Luka Doncic. The Mavs also need to be smart with the contracts they hand out and avoid overpaying for talent.
With Doncic’s max extension kicking in, it will be at least a few years before the Dallas Mavericks have cap space. They are better off finding trades to fill their holes than dreaming of landing a star free agent but stay tuned to see how the front office plays it.
