Does Luka Doncic finally make the Dallas Mavericks a free agent destination?
The Mavs had cap space, and they made a run at Kyle Lowry before he decided to join the Miami Heat in 2021. Their goal was to keep Jalen Brunson this summer. The Mavericks helped him develop from a second-round pick into the team’s second-best player, but he decided to sign with the Knicks in free agency.
Luka Doncic has not attracted the top free agents to Dallas in his first four years, and fans should not expect him to start now. There are two primary reasons why.
The best players are no longer hitting free agency. Look at Kevin Durant and Ben Simmons, they signed max contracts before requesting a trade to get out of their situations with four seasons left on their deals. The money is massive, so they just re-sign and figure out how to get moved later.
If they do become free agents, superstars often pair with another top talent to try to win a championship. Can Doncic convince one of his friends to leave their team and join the Mavericks? He has not shown that ability yet, but one hit will instantly change the perception.
The Dallas Mavericks would love to upgrade their current roster, and they will keep exploring avenues until the trade deadline. Expect the Mavs to improve, but how much could be the difference in a deep playoff run or a first-round exit? Nico Harrison needs to find another trade that propels them for the second straight year.
