What do free agent failures tell us moving forward as Dallas Mavericks try to build around Luka Doncic?
The Mavs have repeatedly swung and missed in free agency, despite having one of the best players of all time on their roster. Their superstar has changed from Dirk Nowitzki to Luka Doncic, but why should they expect a different result?
NBA teams have three avenues to improve their roster. They can do it through the draft, which is how the Mavericks acquired both Doncic and Nowitzki. Teams also have free agency and trades at their disposal. Signing any player that is free to go to any of the 30 teams is always the most difficult way. There is some luck and some skill involved in the process, but more on that to come.
The Mavericks have never been a destination for superstar free agents, so they have tried to build the team through trades since acquiring Doncic. They made the deal to acquire Kristaps Porzingis to be his co-star during Luka’s rookie season, but the move did not work out, so the new front office pivoted and traded KP away for Spencer Dinwiddie at last season’s deadline.
Does Luka Doncic make the Dallas Mavericks a free agency destination or should they keep planning to acquire talent via trade?
