Dallas Mavericks potential trade deadline wish list: 4. Thaddeus Young
New head coach Jason Kidd is preaching chemistry, accountability, and defense during training camp. The Mavs want a cohesive group that competes hard and plays their roles. When searching for upgrades at the deadline expect the focus to be on veterans that are positive locker room influences.
Young fits that description to the letter. The 6’8 forward won the NBA’s hustle award last season, so fans know he is going to compete hard on both ends of the floor. He offers versatility and switchability on defense too.
Young is a streaky 3-point shooter, but he can score, rebound, and make plays. The 33-year-old would be another option for coach Kidd to employ in a playoff series. Young’s played in 51 postseason games in his 14-year NBA career, so he is no stranger to pressure-packed moments.
The veteran forward was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in the offseason and is on a $14.1 million expiring contract. If San Antonio is out of the playoff race before the deadline, expect them to trade Thaddeus Young for a draft pick. The Dallas Mavericks could step up and add a key bench piece that helps them win a playoff series for the first since taking home the title in 2011.
