Thing Dallas Mavericks need to acquire in 2022: 3. Defense

Head coach Jason Kidd emphasized improvement on defense the moment he took the job. It is no secret that the team that wins the championship is normally top ten in defensive rating. Defense ratchets up in the playoffs and getting stops becomes a must.

Dallas had an elite offense each of the last two seasons, but their defense ranked below league-average as the Mavericks made back-to-back first-round playoff exits. Kidd changed the schemes and upped the aggression to help them climb to 14th in defensive rating.

The Mavs are going to need to bring in reinforcements if they plan on jumping into the top ten. Dorian Finney-Smith, Reggie Bullock, and Maxi Kleber are the team’s three best defenders, but they lack a true shutdown option on the perimeter. Improving their defense at the point of attack could do wonders for Dallas.

The Mavericks have struggled mightily on the defensive end when Luka Doncic is on the floor this season. Their 112.2 rating would sit 24th in the league. Dallas needs their superstar to increase his defensive intensity, and the front office needs to improve the cast around him. Adding another plus defender or two could be enough to make the Mavs a top ten unit.
