The Dallas Mavericks faced the hottest team in the league without superstar Luka Doncic on Wednesday night as the 22-year-old was dealing with ankle and knee sprains. The Phoenix Suns had won nine straight coming into the first of two straight meetings between the two teams in Arizona.

Dallas did not back down as Jalen Brunson replaced Doncic in the starting five. The Mavs knew it would take a total team effort to top the Suns, and they got close to making it a reality.

It took a late rally by Phoenix to top Dallas on Nov. 17, but it was an encouraging performance by the Mavericks. Kristaps Porzingis played an outstanding game, but he was far from the only one who stepped up for Dallas. Here are a couple of surprising performances from the Mavs 105-98 loss on Wednesday night.

Trey Burke entered the rotation as the backup point guard with Doncic on the sidelines. He had ten points, two rebounds, and one assist in his 15 minutes of action in Phoenix. Burke was four of seven from the field, and the Mavs outscored the Suns by one point during his time on the floor.

Dallas played a ten-man rotation on Wednesday night, but two of the bench options went scoreless as Reggie Bullock had just two points on five field-goal attempts. The Mavs need more from their second unit if they are going to win without Luka Doncic.
