The Dallas Mavericks are tied for the fifth-best record in the NBA with one week left in the 2021-2022 regular season. Nobody expected them to be in this position superstar Luka Doncic was not in peak condition to start the year, and the Mavs were 12-13 on Dec. 10 with the 23-year-old superstar facing an extended absence.

The rest of the roster survived a COVID outbreak without Luka by treading water, but Dallas was still 17-18 as the calendar flipped to 2022, and they looked like they would be fighting for a play-in position this season. Instead, Luka came back and went on a tear to lift the Mavericks into a position to have homecourt in the first round of the playoffs.

Doncic deserves to be part of the MVP conversation, but he never gets mentioned. The Mavs guard was sixth in ESPN’s latest MVP straw poll, despite deserving to be on every ballot. Here is a look at why Luka should get votes this year.

5 reasons why Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic deserves MVP votes

Winning the MVP award takes both production and narrative. Public perception of the player and his team plays a significant role in the voting.

Can number 77 grab an angle that earns him a significant number of votes? Probably not. He’s not the newest superstar (welcome, Ja Morant), or are the Mavs leading the league. Doncic is also not dragging an injured team to the playoffs, but all the numbers suggest he deserves recognition and voters are overlooking his narrative because of a slow start to the season.
