Thing Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic needs to work on this offseason: 1. Defense
Luka made significant strides on the defensive end of the floor this season. He brought into first-year head coach Jason Kidd’s scheme as he helped the Mavericks finish ninth in defensive rating. It was a massive team-wide improvement, and their defense was key in reaching the Western Conference Finals as they held both Utah and Phoenix to some of their worst scoring performances of the season.
Teams still targeted Luka's defense in the playoffs. They kept putting the 23-year-old in the pick and roll and forced him to defend on the perimeter. Doncic needs to keep working on his defense. He has the size and length to be a passable defender, but number 77 must improve to get there.
Luka is already an unstoppable offensive force, so improving to play average defense takes his game into another stratosphere. The Dallas Mavericks need Doncic to upgrade on this end of the floor if they plan on making another deep playoff run through the difficult Western Conference.
Luka Doncic is already in the gym, and he will put in plenty of work on his game this summer. He must improve his jumper, free throws, defense, and conditioning to help the Mavs reach a new level. Be on the lookout for a few new tricks too when the team returns for training camp this fall. Do not miss it because the best is still yet to come from Doncic and the Mavericks.
