Thing for Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic to work on this offseason: 4. Right step-back
The numbers speak for themselves about Luka’s deadly left step-back, but defenders are starting to overplay him on that side on the perimeter. Doncic often looks to drive when that happens, but teams love to bring help and try to keep him out of the paint as much as possible. It has Luka working on a new weapon.
He busted out this step back going right in a March 3 win over the Golden State Warriors, and he had this to say about the move following the game.
"I think that is going to be really important for me, and I’ve been working on it. You see it a couple of times. Obviously, it is not as good as the left, but keep working, and I think that is going to be a big improvement for me."
Doncic made it clear that he plans on working on the move this summer while answering ESPN’s Tim MacMahon’s follow-up question.
If Luka can step-back to either side and shoot over 35 percent from 3-point range going both ways, he is unstoppable. The 23-year-old already has a deadly mid-range game and is one of the best drivers in the league, so adding an elite 3-point shot pushes him to another level.
Will Doncic be able to master the right step-back this summer? It is something to watch for as he plays for the Slovenian National Team. Luka wants to make it happen, and fans know to never doubt him.
