Kristaps Porzingis adds a new dimension to the Dallas Mavericks offense in the post
Fans remember Rick Carlisle’s famous rant about Porzingis playing more in the post from Dec. 2019. Analytically speaking the Mavs can score at a higher point per possession rate in other ways, so the coach convinced the Unicorn to take more threes.
Porzingis is comfortable in the post and wants to take advantage of those mismatches. His numbers have fallen off a bit in recent games without Luka Doncic, but KP is still scoring 0.95 points per possession on post-ups, which is in the top 42 percent of the league.
The Unicorn made the Jazz pay multiple times on Christmas day out of the post, including when they brought a double team. Fans can see an example below.
The Dallas Mavericks are even more dangerous when Kristaps Porzingis is scoring in the post. They do not have an abundance of shot creation, so the Unicorn giving them one more option makes the team’s offense that much more dynamic.
KP’s numbers in the post are something to watch closely. The Mavs need him scoring over one point per possession to maximize that play type. Porzingis was doing it before Luka missed time, and he should be able to again when the Mavericks 22-year-old superstar returns.
