The Dallas Mavericks are struggling with COVID issues. Superstar Luka Doncic is one of ten Mavs players to enter the health and safety protocols over the last two weeks. The latest addition was Isaiah Thomas, who was just signed by Dallas on Wednesday afternoon as a replacement player.

Thomas was just coming off a ten-day stint with the Lakers where he played four games as they dealt with their COVID issues. The 32-year-old point guard was immediately thrust into the rotation as the backup point guard. He played 13 minutes in a heartbreaking loss to the Kings, despite only being with the team for a few hours.

Thomas was impressive in his lone game with the Mavericks. Here is a closer look at his performance, and why Dallas will need to sign another point guard before their rematch against the Kings in Sacramento on New Year’s Eve.

Thomas had six points and four assists in his 13 minutes of action on Wednesday evening. He was out there running pick and rolls and forcing mismatches. The two-time All-Star received a massive ovation from the Sacramento crowd and played well after just arriving with the team.

Thomas can still get buckets. It was fantastic to see him back in NBA games after hip injuries have plagued him in recent years.

Luka Doncic, Trey Burke, Brandon Knight, and Isaiah Thomas are four of the eight Mavs currently in the health and safety protocols, which leaves Jalen Brunson as the only healthy point guard on the roster. Dallas needs to add another ball-handler and playmaker before Friday’s game in Sacramento, so fans should expect another ten-day replacement player to be inked before tipoff.

The Dallas Mavericks are struggling to stay afloat with so many players out in the health and safety protocols. They are now two games under .500 after losing five of their last seven. Can they right the ship on Friday night in Sacramento? Stay tuned to find out.
