The Dallas Mavericks want to build an annual title-contending team around superstar Luka Doncic. They reached the conference finals last season, but the departure of Jalen Brunson in free agency has their front office searching for more talent. Dallas needs another playmaker, and they would love to improve their defense.
The Mavs will be linked to every player that hits the trade block before the Feb. 9 deadline because they are searching for talent. Dallas still owes their 2023 first-round pick to the New York Knicks from the original Kristaps Porzingis trade, so it will be difficult for the Mavericks to acquire a star player, but everything is on the table. Nico Harrison and company want to improve their roster, and they are not afraid to be aggressive.
With that in mind, here are five trades they should consider for the Feb. 9 deadline.
Trade Dallas Mavericks should consider before the deadline: 5. Find a Collins deal
John Collins has been on the trade block for years. There are always rumors, but the Hawks have never pulled the trigger on a deal. Jake Fischer reported that Atlanta wanted a first-round pick and a starter for Collins in trade talks last season. His price has only decreased since then, so would the Hawks consider this move?
Atlanta desperately needs shooting around Trae Young and Dejounte Murray. They are 24th in 3-point attempts this season and 27th in 3-point percentage. Tim Hardaway Jr. had his breakout season with the Hawks, and he is an above-league-average shooter that can get white hot. Would he be a better fit on the Hawks than Collins?
John Collins is still only 25 years old. There has been plenty of talk about his down year, but he is still averaging 13.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in 31.2 minutes per game while shooting 49.5 percent from the field and 80.7 percent on his free throws. He would give Dallas another pick-and-pop big man that could thrive playing off Luka Doncic.
Will John Collins finally get traded before the deadline? Can the Mavericks be the team that acquires his services? Stay tuned to find out.
