Dallas Mavericks trade to shake up roster: 2. Hawks blockbuster

If the Hawks are going to trade John Collins to get Christian Wood, then why not just deal him to Dallas? Here the Mavericks add both Bogdanovic and Collins as the Hawks try to trim their tax bill moving forward and regain some draft capital.

The Mavs have been rumored to be interested in John Collins for years. He is having a down season, and the asking price has reportedly dropped significantly because of the three years and $78.5 million left on his contract after this season. The Hawks just want a quality role player in return in some deals, according to The Athletic’s Sam Amick (subscription required).

Swapping Bogdanovic for Tim Hardaway Jr. would save Atlanta a bit of money next season, and they could get off Collins's contract, plus add a first-round draft pick. Wood and Hardaway Jr. help the Hawks stay competitive this season, and give them more avenues to explore this summer as they look to build around Trae Young and Dejounte Murray.

The Dallas Mavericks certainly shake up their roster here. They add a skilled big man that could be Luka Doncic’s primary pick-and-roll partner and a capable offensive wing. Some may argue Dallas is playing with their food here by trading two like-for-like players at the cost of a first-round pick, but Collins and Bogdanovic are both upgrades, even if they are not massive ones.
