Can the Dallas Mavericks trade for Mike Conley?

Conley is set to make $22.68 million this season, and he has $14.32 million guaranteed of his $24.36 million for next year. The 34-year-old point guard is just one year removed from being an All-Star, but his production took a significant downturn last season. Still, Conley averaged 13.7 points, 5.3 assists, and 1.3 steals in 28.6 minutes per game.

Several contenders will be interested in a veteran point guard that can space the floor and run the offense. His contract will be a bit of a deterrent, but there is certainly a market.

The Mavs would have to match salary in any trade because they are over the cap. Utah has prioritized draft picks, especially unprotected or lightly protected ones. Dallas figures to be a contender for the foreseeable future, but it would cost them multiple players to trade for the 6’1 guard unless they moved Tim Hardaway Jr. or Spencer Dinwiddie in the deal. Losing one of those two would make little sense, and mitigates the upgrade they are getting from Conley.

The Mavericks would also have to outbid the other teams interested in Conley. Utah saw firsthand what Luka Doncic can do in the playoffs, so will they be eager to acquire the Mavs first-round pick? Would Dallas even offer one for Conley? The deal makes sense if the Mavericks can trade Davis Bertans to Utah, but Mike Conley is not a large enough upgrade to warrant surrendering a first-round pick.
