Player Dallas Mavericks could still trade for this offseason: 1. Damian Lillard
Everything would have to line up perfectly for this move to come to fruition. There were rumblings early in the offseason that Lillard wants out of Portland. He squashed them, but noted he wanted to see improvements by the Blazers. Dame has four years and $176.2 million remaining on his contract. The only way he is leaving Portland is via trade.
Yes, the Mavericks will not have the strongest package to offer for Lillard, but that may not matter. Superstars get to pick where they play. The Nets did not have the most to offer for James Harden, but he wanted to go to Brooklyn so the two sides got a deal done. Lillard could play for nearly any team, but who would he choose?
The six-time All-Star let it be known that he wanted Jason Kidd to be Portland’s head coach when the job was open. The Hall of Fame point guard is now the leading man in Dallas. Lillard also has a strong relationship with new Mavericks general manager and president of basketball operations Nico Harrison. Would that and Luka Doncic be enough to put Dallas into the lead in the Lillard sweepstakes? It is possible.
Damian Lillard would have to ask for a trade for him to leave Portland. He wanted upgrades, but the Blazers made minimal moves this offseason. Could that be the final straw? The Dallas Mavericks will be calling if Lillard becomes available. Stay tuned to see how it all shakes out.
