Player Dallas Mavericks could still trade for this offseason: 4. Lauri Markkanen
Markkanen’s case is different because he is not under contract at this moment. The 24-year-old is a restricted free agent meaning the Bulls can match any offer sheet he signs. Cap space across the league has dried up, so any team acquiring him at this point would have to do it via a sign-and-trade. Chicago is demanding a first-round pick in a deal. The Mavs are interested but have so far not been willing to meet their asking price.
Will things change? Markkanen has made it known that he wants out of Chicago and that he would prefer to play in Dallas next to Luka Doncic. Will he sign the qualifying offer to stay with the Bulls if no team steps up to offer a first-rounder? Chicago wants to win. Is having an unhappy player coming off the bench the best strategy to accomplish that goal? There are more questions than answers right now with the Markkanen situation.
The Dallas Mavericks want to add talent, and Lauri Markkanen offers plenty. He is a young proven 15-point per game scorer that should keep improving. The Mavs know the price and could acquire him at any moment.
