Thing Dallas Mavericks must do to win Game 3 over Jazz: 3. Sturdy D

The Jazz failed to top 100 points in Game 1 and scored just 104 in their loss to the Mavericks on Monday night as they have been forced into difficult shots at every turn by Dallas.

Utah attempted the second-most 3-pointers per game during the regular season at 40.3, but they have taken just 51 in the first two games combined. The Mavericks are impressively both limiting 3-pointers and shots at the rim in the series with strong connected defense. Their defense took a massive step forward this season, and it has carried over into the playoffs.

The Mavericks have stiffened in the fourth quarter too. Utah made just nine of 22 field goals in Game 1 and was ten of 24 in their Game 2 loss. The Jazz struggled in clutch situations all season, and Dallas is making them pay by forcing difficult looks and giving up no easy buckets at the rim.

Utah led the league in offensive rating during the regular season at 116.2, and that number climbed to 118.4 in home games. The Jazz have one of the best homecourt advantages in the league, and they plan on using it on Thursday night. Dallas needs to keep up the defense inside the rocking Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City if they want to pull the upset.
