Thing Dallas Mavericks must do to win Game 3 over Warriors: 4. Defend

The Mavs have reached the Western Conference Finals on the back of their defense. Fans saw a massive improvement in the regular season as they jumped from 21st to seventh in defensive rating with largely the same personnel. First-year head coach Jason Kidd preached defense from day one and the entire roster bought into his new scheme.

Dallas limited the Utah Jazz to 100 or fewer points four times in six games to take their first-round series, including the final three contests. The Mavs held the Suns to their three lowest-scoring games of the season in the final five to reach the Western Conference Finals.

The Golden State Warriors present a unique challenge because of their off-ball movement and incredible shooting. They are averaging 119 points per game so far in this series while shooting 56.1 percent on their 164 field goal attempts. Dallas has limited them to 28.5 3-point attempts per game, but the Dubs shot the lights out at Chase Center.

The Mavericks defend better at home, and they must do it to win Game 3. Dallas must slow down Kevon Looney, who had a career-high 21 points in Game 2. Stephen Curry, Jordan Poole, and Klay Thompson are all problems Dallas is focused on, and it will be interesting to see if the Mavericks can step up their defense at AAC. They must hold the Dubs under 110 to give themselves a chance on Sunday night.
