Takeaway from Dallas Mavericks Game 1 playoff loss to Suns: 1. Helping Luka
Luka Doncic put on a show in Game 1, but he did not get enough help until the fourth quarter to keep the Mavs in the game. He scored 45 points on 15 of 30 shooting from the field, including throwing down two dunks.
The Suns do not have an answer for Luka. They used Mikal Bridges as the primary defender on Doncic, but he cannot be slowed down. Number 77 forced plenty of switches on his way to his sixth 40-point playoff game.
Maxi Kleber got hot and scored 19 points off the bench, including hitting five 3-pointers. He was the only Maverick other than Doncic that scored more than four points in the first half when the Suns dominated.
Dorian Finney-Smith had 15 in Game 1, but the Mavs non-Luka point guards struggled. Brunson scored 13 and Dinwiddie had just eight points and four dimes in 30 minutes of action. Dallas needs their role players to step up on both ends of the floor moving forward.
The Mavericks made a run in the fourth quarter that will hopefully give them some life heading into Game 2. They won the final period 35-25 as they found some success on both ends of the floor. Luka Doncic is going to get his, but can the rest of the Mavs produce enough to defeat the Suns? It is one of the many things to watch for the remainder of the series.
