Takeaway from Dallas Mavericks first 5 games: 2. Defense
The Mavs struggled on the defensive end of the floor in Luka Doncic’s first three NBA seasons. Last year, they finished 21st in defensive rating, and they had to win shootouts. Luckily, Dallas had one of the best offenses in the league and could do that frequently.
New head coach Jason Kidd has focused on chemistry, accountability, and defense since being hired. He changed the Mavericks scheme, increased their aggressiveness, and has them competing on both ends of the floor. Dallas has already won games with their defense, and they currently sit 11th in defensive rating after five contests.
Will Dallas be a top ten defense this season? It is too early to tell, but the team is giving more energy and effort on that end of the floor. Fans can hear Luka talk it about in his postgame press conferences. The Dallas Mavericks want to be a better defensive team and the fruits of that desire are already on display.
They are not a finished product on this end of the floor either. Fans should be watching closely to see what other adjustments head coach Jason Kidd and defensive coordinator Sean Sweeney make as the season progress. Regardless, Dallas has improved their defense.
