Storyline to watch in 2022-23 season: 3. Do Dallas Mavericks need another ball-handler?
The Mavs front office watched Jalen Brunson walk in free agency, and they did not add a replacement. Dallas thrived with two ball-handlers sharing the floor last season, but now, they have just two playmakers on their roster in Luka Doncic and Spencer Dinwiddie. Both will start, but head coach Jason Kidd has to stagger their minutes to keep the offense afloat.
The Mavs entered training camp hoping that Josh Green, Frank Ntilikina, or Jaden Hardy would fill that third point guard role, but it did not happen. Dallas needed another option, so they worked out a deal with Facundo Campazzo, but the undersized guard cannot handle 25-plus minutes per game.
Will the Mavs be in the market for a ball-handler at the trade deadline? Can they pull off a deal that helps them acquire a star player or do they prioritize the future opportunity to add one by not trading a first-round pick? Victor Wembanyama will have teams tanking all over the league, but can Dallas acquire a ball-handler on the cheap?
Every team values playmaking, and it could shift the question to whether is it worth parting with a future first-round pick to get the immediate upgrade. Fans will quickly find out Dallas need another playmaker, but will they be able to acquire one? Stay tuned to find out.
