Dallas Mavericks storyline to watch in 2022-23 season: 4. Can THJ bounce back?
Tim Hardaway Jr. missed the team’s run to the conference finals last season as he recovered from foot surgery. The 6’5 wing was the team’s second-leading scorer in the 2021 playoffs, but he struggled before his season-ending injury in January as THJ shot just 39.4 percent from the field and 33.6 percent on his threes over 42 games.
Hardaway Jr. signed a four-year $75 million contract in the summer of 2021, and he was viewed as a top 100 player before the struggles and the injury. Now, the 30-year-old wing is looking to prove himself again. Can he efficiently score 15 points per game this season? Were last season’s shooting woes a fluke? Can THJ get back to shooting over 39 percent from 3-point range as he did in his two full seasons under Rick Carlisle?
The Mavs explored the trade market for Hardaway Jr. at last season’s trade deadline and again this offseason. Can he bounce back and prove that he should be part of the Mavericks' long-term plans?
THJ is healthy, and he has played well during training camp. Will that translate into an efficient shooting season? It is worth monitoring.
