Dallas Mavericks rumors: Cavaliers are interested in acquiring Tim Hardaway Jr.

One of the more surprising rumors dropped when Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com joined Jake Fischer’s Please Don’t Aggregate This podcast in early January where the scribed noted the Cavaliers interest in Tim Hardaway Jr. Cleveland desperately needs quality minutes and shot-making on the wing, but it was surprising that they would be interested in trading for THJ’s contract, which still has two years at just over $34 million left on it after this season.

The most likely trade would be a Hardaway Jr. for LeVert swap with likely another piece heading to Cleveland. Dallas has been interested in LeVert before, and he would give the Mavericks some additional playmaking and ball-handling ability.

The Cavaliers want to upgrade on the wing before the Feb. 9 trade deadline, but that does not mean that they will trade with the Mavs. Multiple wings will be available, especially as the final whistle gets closer and more sellers appear. The crowded standings have some teams hesitating and waiting to see which way to go, but that will change when February arrives.

The Dallas Mavericks will certainly shop Tim Hardaway Jr. before Feb. 9, but he is a key shot-maker for the team. They would have to replace his scoring punch or upgrade elsewhere to make trading him worthwhile.
