Dallas Mavericks 2023 trade deadline bold prediction: 4. Don’t trade 1st round pick

The Mavs face a difficult dilemma with what they want to trade. They have two first-round picks available to deal, but they are just four months from having a full cupboard in play. Do the Mavericks trade one at the deadline to improve their roster or keep the powder dry for chasing a second star in the offseason?

The organization’s goal remains the same. They want to build a championship team around Luka Doncic, so the front office has to make moves that align with that desire. If they believe adding a rotation piece is not enough to push them toward title contention, the Mavs are wise to keep their firsts and go star-chasing this summer.

Prices are high because the number of sellers is limited. The play-in tournament gives four teams league-wide an additional game and keeps them in the race. Add in the crowded nature of the standings and only a handful of teams are confirming they are lottery-bound and looking to sell. If the Mavericks are going to buy, someone has to be willing to give up the assets.

The Dallas Mavericks are unable to find a blockbuster trade before the deadline, so they keep their first-round picks for another day.
