The Dallas Mavericks are not bringing back Jalen Brunson as the unrestricted free agent guard agreed to join the New York Knicks. He was the team’s top offseason priority, but Brunson wanted to play in New York where his father is an assistant coach.

The Mavs are now forced to replace his production, and it won’t be easy. JB scored 21 points per game in the playoffs, and he was a key reason why Dallas advanced to the Western Conference Finals. The Mavericks traded for Christian Wood to help fill that scoring void, but they still have needs for a 3-and-D wing, rim protector, and another ball-handler.

Kevin Durant’s trade request sent shockwaves through the NBA, and Kyrie Irving will be another domino to fall after the KD situation gets sorted. Irving went to Brooklyn to play with Durant, so they will both likely move on. Fans thought Kyrie could be a target for the Mavericks after Brunson’s departure, but that does not appear to be the case.

Rumors: Dallas Mavericks not expected to pursue Kyrie Irving trade

Irving opted in on his $36.5 million player option for next season, but he was searching for a long-term extension. Brooklyn was not willing to give him the full max, but they did make shorter offers. Irving now appears set to move if Durant is traded.

Marc Stein reported that one of his sources believes the Mavericks have no interest in targeting Irving, despite his availability.

Kyrie Irving has played just 103 of a possible 218 regular-season games over the last three years. Yes, the vaccine mandate things are in the past, but Irving has not been the healthiest player otherwise. The Mavericks traded Kristaps Porzingis in part because he could not stay healthy, so why would they go acquire another piece that struggles to stay on the floor?

The Dallas Mavericks are looking for wing upgrades in free agency, and it will be interesting to see what they can get done this offseason. Stay tuned to The Smoking Cuban for all the latest.
