Ranking Dallas Mavericks offseason moves: 1. Extend Luka

Luka Doncic earned every penny of his historic rookie max extension that he signed this offseason. He was named first-team All-NBA for two straight years to make him the first player to qualify for the Rose Rule extension upon signing the contract. The 22-year-old is a perennial MVP candidate that is only going to improve.

The Mavericks locked Luka up for five years. He has a player option for the final season, but the earliest Doncic could hit free agency is 2026. That leaves the Mavs front office four years to build a title contender around their superstar because a trade demand would get serious a full year before he would hit the open market. Dallas should not wait in improving around the 22-year-old.

The Dallas Mavericks need Luka Doncic. He is well on his way to being the best player and face of the NBA. Locking him up to a five-year extension was the biggest move of the offseason and might be their largest one for multiple years. Having a superstar is the first step to building a title contender. Now, the Mavs are just searching for the right supporting cast.
