Dallas Mavericks biggest question heading into 2022 offseason: 2. Will they re-sign JB?
Mavs guard Jalen Brunson heads into unrestricted free agent this summer, and his price went up after a breakout playoff run. The 6’1 guard proved he is a starter and capable postseason standout as he helped Dallas win two of three games with Luka Doncic sidelined in the first round and averaged 21.6 points per game in the playoffs.
The Mavs have already made multiple mistakes in keeping JB long-term. His rookie contract as a second-round pick was structured without an option, which prevent Dallas from making him a restricted free agent. Dallas also had a chance to extend him but failed to make the offer until it was too late.
Now, Brunson is free to sign with any team come July 1, and the Mavericks will have to win a bidding war for his services. The 25-year-old is expected to command at least $20 million per season on the open market.
Re-signing Brunson pushes Dallas deep into the luxury tax. Mark Cuban and the Mavs are confident that they will re-sign JB, but what does their offer look like given their impending tax bill? It will be the biggest storyline for MFFLs to watch this summer.
