Biggest question heading into 2022 offseason: 5. How can Dallas Mavericks upgrade at center?

There was plenty of skepticism when the Mavericks traded Kristaps Porzingis and a second-round pick to the Wizards for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans, but the deal was a win for Dallas. They acquired future flexibility and won their first two playoffs series for the first time since 2011.

The trade left the Mavericks with a hole in their big man rotation. Head coach Jason Kidd stuck with Dwight Powell as their starting center throughout the postseason, but the position was clearly the team’s biggest weakness. Sending KP to Washington also left the Mavs without a rim protector.

Dallas must add a rim protector and rebounder to their roster, but how they upgrade this position is important. The Mavericks had their most success this postseason going small and playing five-out. It creates room for Luka Doncic and Jalen Brunson to attack and makes matchup problems all over the floor.

With Doncic’s max extension kicking in, the Mavs must explore the trade market for a rim protector. Fans have heard the Rudy Gobert rumors, but expect the Mavs to go for a lesser option that could start during the regular season before taking on a smaller role come playoff time.
