Pass or pursue on Dallas Mavericks trade idea: 1. Ship KP to Pelicans
Bleacher Report produced another set of blockbuster trades to get done before opening night, and this time, they had Kristaps Porzingis heading to New Orleans in the following deal.
This move creates financial flexibility for the Mavericks. Jonas Valanciunas and Tomas Satoransky are both on expiring contracts with Jaxson Hayes still playing out his rookie deal. Dallas cannot make the deal for that reason alone because they would only have about $9 million in cap space to use in the summer of 2022.
Valanciunas would solve the Mavericks' rebounding issues and give them a big body capable of spacing the floor and running pick and rolls with Luka. Satoransky fills a need by providing ball-handling and playmaking with Hayes having plenty of potential.
Acquiring three players for one would be difficult, so should the Mavs take on the headache of clearing two roster spots?
Valanciunas is a slight downgrade from Kristaps Porzingis, but this move helps the Dallas Mavericks fill a hole and gives them two second-round picks to use in additional moves. Dallas should push for a first-rounder because that could make this deal a slam dunk. It would give the Mavs a chance to add a second star and build a title contender around Luka Doncic for years to come.
