Did the Dallas Mavericks make a mistake in trading for Christian Wood?
One season of Christian Wood playing an average of 25 minutes off the bench was not worth a late first-round draft pick. Even if Dallas took Jaden Hardy in the first round, it would have saved them the two second-round picks to use in other deals. Yes, the Mavs needed to clear a few roster spots last summer, but dumping a first-round pick when trying to accumulate talent and assets was not wise business.
General manager Nico Harrison and the Mavericks front office have made several mistakes since taking over in the summer of 2021. From not offering Jalen Brunson a well-below-market value extension to failing to read the room in his free agency, those errors have hurt the franchise. One area where Harrison’s front office has been strong is trades, but this Christian Wood deal has been a mistake.
Wood is incredibly talented, and he will find a team for next season. It appears it won’t be back in Dallas, but some franchise will take a shot on his talent.
C-Wood has done and said all the right things this season, but he wants to be an All-Star. He will head to the team offering him the most playing time over chasing a championship in free agency.
