Most likely Dallas Mavericks to be traded this offseason: 1. Dwight Powell
Powell was the team’s starting center in every playoff game, but he was clearly their weakest link. The 6’10 big man was limited to just 13.8 minutes per game as opposing teams did well at limiting his lob threat when the games mattered most. Powell just does not offer much else, and the Mavs would prefer to use Maxi Kleber as their big man off the bench.
Powell is set to make just over $11 million next season before heading into free agency in 2023, and now is the perfect time to trade him. He will have an expiring contract next season, and his salary plus another contract allows Dallas to add an impactful role player. Teams will not be weighed down by multiple years like they would in acquiring Tim Hardaway Jr. or Davis Bertans.
The Mavericks must upgrade their center position this summer. They will be looking for a big man that eats minutes during the regular season, and a stretch option that can take over in the playoffs when Dallas wants to go small. The Mavs must clear Dwight Powell off their books to have room for their new big men.
Expect the Dallas Mavericks to be active and aggressive on the trade market this summer. Luka Doncic is likely the only player off-limits in trade talks as they try to build a title contender. Stay tuned to see what the front office can accomplish.
