The Dallas Mavericks decided to re-sign guard Kyrie Irving to a massive three-year extension this summer, and during his time in Dallas, he has defied expectations.

Although Dallas hasn't seen the on-court success that they hoped for when they traded for the star guard, Irving has proved that he has been a bit misunderstood during his time in the NBA.

He was often labeled as a bad teammate and a distraction before coming to Dallas, but since being on the Mavs, he has proved that those things aren't true. Irving has been a model citizen and teammate since being on the Mavericks, and he is fully invested in winning a title in Dallas.

Dallas' success will rely on whether the Irving and Luka Doncic duo takes another step in the right direction and if those around them can step up. Although Irving has only been in Dallas for less than a year, he is already vowing to be a leader for this team.

At Dallas' Toast to Tipoff Fundraiser on Sunday night, Irving showed that he could care less about the accolades. He wants to win and lead this team.

"I’m here to lead these guys in a different way they haven’t been led before," Irving said. "That includes me getting uncomfortable at times and being vulnerable. And that's what I'm about."

This was an inspirational statement from Irving, and we could see him turn into a type of leader that we have never seen before from him.

Irving "getting uncomfortable" and leading this team alongside Doncic could allow them to reach new heights and potentially return to the level of chemistry that the team had during the 2022 NBA Playoffs.

Last year, the chemistry was clearly off, and hopefully, Irving's newly found leadership can be a big part of what Dallas does going forward. The Mavericks' first regular season game is on October 25 against the San Antonio Spurs.
