The Dallas Mavericks reached the conference finals last season before being dominated by the eventual champion Golden State Warriors. Superstar Luka Doncic took his game to another level during the team’s surprise run, but they fell short of his goal of winning a championship.

Dallas lost Jalen Brunson this offseason, and they need to improve the roster around Doncic to be true title contenders. The Mavs have the hardest piece to acquire, but building the talent around him has not been easy. They need a second star to reach the next level, but acquiring one is easier said than done.

How can the Mavericks land another star? Every team has three avenues to improve its roster. Can the Mavs draft a second star? Do they create cap space to land one in free agency or is trading for one the only way to do it? Here is a look at why Dallas cannot acquire a second star right now before diving into where and when their chance will come.

Why the draft is not an option for the Dallas Mavericks to add a star to pair with Luka Doncic

Having Doncic all but guarantees the Mavs 45 regular season wins every year, which means Dallas will be drafting in the 20s when they have a selection. They owe their 2023 first-round pick to the Knicks from the original Kristaps Porzingis trade, so they do not even have the option this year. Going forward, it will be almost impossible to draft a star where the Mavericks will select.

Jarrett Allen was selected 22nd in the 2017 NBA Draft, and he was an All-Star last season. The Mavs do not have five years to wait for their pick to blossom. They cannot land their second star in the draft, which leaves them just two avenues to explore and one of those has never worked out for the Dallas Mavericks.
