After a little over a week after the Dallas Mavericks completed a sign-and-trade to acquire Klay Thompson, the Mavericks had their introductory press conference for Thompson alongside Naji Marshall who they inked to a three-year deal and Quentin Grimes who they acquired in a trade for Tim Hardaway Jr..
It was obvious that Thompson was excited to join the Mavs after being in the Golden State Warriors organization for 13 years.
Thompson had a lot to say about joining forces with the Mavs to be their third star after the team came off losing in the 2024 NBA Finals to the Boston Celtics.
5 Biggest takeaways from Klay Thompson's Mavericks introductory press conference
While in the introductory press conference with the Mavs, Thompson is looking forward to being in Dallas, and said positive things about being in Texas.
Here are the five biggest takeaways from Klay Thompson's introductory press conference with the Dallas Mavericks.
5. Klay Thompson shares a bond with Kyrie Irving
When a player joins a new team in free agency, it can be uncertain to how a player will react with the players on the team. For Thompson, that's not the case with All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving.
Even with Thompson beating Irving in two previous NBA Finals, Thompson is ready to get to work with Irving in Dallas. The two were both drafted in 2011 and played on two Team USA teams together.
"I've always been a fan of Kai's game," Thompson said. "And, guarding him was hell, so, it's nice to be on the other end of that for once. And, see other defenders get loose and shook by him. That's gonna be a good site to see."
It's obvious that Thompson is ready to move on to play with another elite point guard in Irving. The two have chemistry from their USA days and Thompson is ready to work now. And with Doncic too, the three of them together will be a strong presence on the court at all times. Having three elite scorers will scare teams at all times.
Irving also helped recruit Thompson to Dallas, and they will likely be good friends on and off the floor.
4. Klay Thompson wants to lock in defensively
For most NBA fans, without thinking much about it, they will view Klay Thompson for mainly his offensive game and not his defense, particularly his outstanding 3-point shooting. However, Thompson wants to bring more to his game in Dallas besides his 3-point shooting.
At the press conference with Thompson sitting next to Naji Marshall and Quentin Grimes, they were asked about defense. Thompson had praise for Mashall's defense and Grimes' defense.
"Playing against these two, I mean, that's why they're here," Thompson said. "Not cause it's pretty, cause they lock up, and willing to do the dirty work. I've gone against both of them. So, we're gonna have some battles at practice. I'm excited about that."
If Thompson is already looking forward to having defensive battles against Marshall and Grimes, it's obvious he's ready to work. But, being excited about having battles at practice for his defense should give the rest of the NBA a scare that Thompson is ready to work even harder.
The Mavs have incredible talent on their roster that's hard to defend as it is. Thompson is going to have hard battles at practice against them, but it sure will help him get ready for the regular season.
With Thompson excited about locking down defensively, this is going to bring an extra boost of energy for the Mavs next season, and it's going to be a good thing the team will need.
Thompson showed confidence that he can still compete defensively, and although he isn't the same all-defense player he once was, he knows he can still lock in on that end.
3. Klay Thompson wanted a fresh start
It's hard for any player in sports to leave a team after spending 13 years with one organization. This was Klay Thompson's case as he was part of the Warriors organization since 2011. It can be hard to say goodbye to an organization after 13 years as in Thompson's case. However, maybe a fresh start can be the best thing for a player.
Thompson admitted that the end of his tenure with the Warriors was tough with the pressure of being an All-NBA player. Keeping up his consistency was tough due to the injuries Thompson has suffered since 2019 with him approaching age 30. Now for Thompson in Dallas, he may have gotten away from the Warriors pressure and can start fresh with a new team at 34 years old.
"Coming here is such a fresh start, and feeling just wanted again," Thompson said. "And, I bring great value. It just gets me excited to go out there and even work out after this press conference, and get shots up."
It's obvious that Dallas has a culture change that is changing for the better of the organization with reaching two Western Conference Finals and an NBA Finals over the past three seasons. NBA players now want to play in Dallas, and the city will be a free agency destination just like it was for Thompson this summer. With now being in Dallas, Thompson is ready to have a chance to wear a Mavericks jersey in October.
"I'm going to embrace the heck out of this opportunity," Thompson said.
2. Klay Thompson thinks the Mavs were the perfect match
When a player is a free agent and looking for a new team, it's important for that player to be a perfect match for that one team. For Klay Thompson, he believed the Mavs were the perfect fit for him.
A key reason to what Thompson saw as a perfect match to signing with the Mavs is the fact the they have an outstanding duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. With his joy for the game diminishing in Golden State, Thompson saw Dallas' duo attractive to play with.
"Guys like Luka and Kyrie on the floor, I think just me being out there is going to give them a lot of space to operate. Same with our big men," Thompson said. I mean, Dereck [Lively II] and Daniel [Gafford], just their ability to roll and finish is also great."
It's not just the duo of Doncic and Irving, but the other talent with Dallas' big men that Thompson was able to see being a perfect fit in Dallas.
When he left the Warriors, Thompson needed to go to a new team that was going to fit his game at a high level, and right now with the current roster the Mavs have, Thompson found the right team to fit in. Thompson sees himself in the right situation in Dallas to keep his game at a high level.
1. Klay Thompson is ready to win a ring this year
The Dallas Mavericks are coming off a tough five-game series loss in the 2024 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics. Klay Thompson is coming off a disastrous scoreless 2024 Play-In Tournament game. But together, they are ready to win a championship.
Thompson already has four NBA championships on his resume and can pass NBA legend LeBron James' four titles if he wins a championship in 2025.
"You want to have that pressure, and you want to have expectations from the fan base, the city that, you know, we want a winner," Thompson said. "That's what attracted me too. I'm not really into breaking more shooting records. I just want to win at this point. That's what I learned at Golden State like, everyone's got to make sacrifices to win at the highest level."
Thompson has championship pedigree and has always been an unselfish player. Thompson knows that he might have to play less minutes, or score less, and play more of a leader role. But, the Mavs and Thompson care about one thing, and that is winning.
"I'll make sacrifices for the team," Thompson said. "But, as long as we play winning basketball, that's all that really matters."
Thompson seemed ecstatic to be a Maverick during the entire press conference, and he is ready to get to work. He was getting shots up with P.J. Washington within minutes of his presser ending, and this season has the potential to be special.
The Dallas Mavericks fans, players and the rest of the organization is super excited to have Thompson on the team with a chance to compete for an NBA championship. Thompson has already spoken highly of what it will be like living in Texas to go along with playing the Mavs. For the latest news on the Mavericks, stay tuned.
