The Dallas Mavericks have won eight of their first 12 games to begin the 2021-2022 season, and fans have only seen superstar Luka Doncic go off in one of those games. Detractors will be quick to point out that Dallas did not have the toughest early slate and they were blown out four times, but the Mavs are winning games they are favored to win.

Supporters should have expected a bit of a slow start. Their undefeated preseason glossed over the fact that Dallas was playing under a new head coach that was making changes on both sides of the ball. The Mavericks have not always maximized the space on the floor or communicated properly, but there are still 8-4 going into the Nov. 15 contest against the Denver Nuggets.

Dallas has been outscored by an average of 1.6 points per game so far, and the team’s issues are easy to spot. Having one of the five best players in the world raises a team’s ceiling and floor, but without fixing some things, the Mavs are likely to be knocked in the first round of the playoffs for the third straight year.

The good news is the Mavs are trending up. They played arguably their best game of the season on Nov. 12 as they dominated the Spurs in San Antonio. Luka and his teammates will be looking to build on that as they attempt to fix the five biggest issues facing their team.
