Dallas Mavericks all-time draft bust starting center: Doug Smith

The Mavs selected Smith sixth overall in 1991 after just their second losing season in eight years. They put the 6’10 big man immediately into the rotation as Dallas entered a full-scale rebuild. Smith played four seasons for the Mavericks, but he never saw more than 25 minutes per game.

He was selected by the Toronto Raptors in the 1995 expansion draft, but he never played for them. Smith would play just 17 more games in his NBA career before heading into the Continental Basketball Association.

Smith was on the floor in just 296 NBA games where he averaged 8.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 19.7 minutes a night. The 6’10 big man just never found his footing, and he did not live up to the hype of being the sixth overall pick.

Smith played in the Continental Basketball Association from 1996 to 2005, and he was second-team All-CBA in 1998. It was a 14-year professional basketball career after playing four years at the University of Missouri. Smith found success just never in the NBA.

The Dallas Mavericks selected plenty of draft busts, but they cannot afford to miss as they look to build around Luka Doncic. Stay tuned to see if the front office keeps their draft picks or decides to trade them for assets that are ready to help them win immediately.
